Baitella AG: How Terminology Management Improved the Quality of Translations in the Medical Sector

In the medical field, linguistic precision isn’t just a choice — it’s a requirement. Instructions for Use (IFU), technical documentation, and informational materials must be translated with accuracy, consistency, and full compliance with local regulations.

This is exactly where our collaboration with Baitella AG began – a Swiss company renowned for its innovative FISSO – branded holding systems.

Based in Zurich, Baitella AG is an internationally recognized manufacturer of articulated arms, columns, and support clamps used in medical, industrial, and photographic applications. Their products are designed to ensure stability, safety, and precision – especially in surgical and diagnostic settings where every detail matters.

We’ve been working with Baitella for quite some time as their official provider of multilingual language services, handling translations of their materials into several European languages, including Italian, German, French, and Spanish. Our role goes beyond translation — it also involves standardizing terminology to ensure consistency and reliability across all texts.

One of the main challenges was properly managing Baitella’s proprietary technical terminology. Terms such as:

  • “FISSO pads”
  • “Articulated arm”
  • “Fastening screw”
  • “Rx only”
  • “Intended use”

These terms carry highly specific meanings and cannot be translated loosely or inconsistently from one document to another. For this reason, together with the Baitella team, we created a bilingual EN–IT terminology glossary that compiles all recurring technical terms along with their approved translations.

This resource allows us to maintain maximum consistency across documents and reduce revision time, providing the client with output that already meets the required standards.

Building on this glossary, we also wanted to simulate a use case to show Baitella — and other clients — how a fully automated translation workflow could operate through our DIY (Do It Yourself) Portal.

Although we currently manage Baitella’s translations directly, the portal offers an ideal solution for teams seeking greater autonomy and speed in their language management — while still maintaining full control over terminology.

How would it work? Let’s take a look, step by step!

The client uploads the file to be translated (for example, an IFU in .docx format).

They select the target languages — in this case, from English to Italian.

They choose the appropriate domain: “Medical Device.”

They activate the terminology glossary specifically created for Baitella.

They launch the automatic translation, which seamlessly incorporates the approved terminology choices.

They download the document — either ready to use or for final review.

The advantage? Faster translations — without compromising quality or technical consistency.

We compared two versions of the same translated document — one with the glossary enabled and one without it. With the glossary active, terms like “stop lid” are consistently translated as “coperchio di arresto,” ensuring uniformity across every occurrence.

Without the glossary, however, the same term may be translated in different or less precise ways — increasing the risk of ambiguity and the need for manual review.

The collaboration with Baitella AG demonstrates just how much of a difference well-structured terminology management can make.

Although the DIY portal has not yet been activated in their specific case, the combination of a technical glossary and translation technology paves the way for new, more agile, scalable, and customizable workflows for any company in the medical or technical-industrial sector.

Would you like to do the same in your company?

Whether you want to fully outsource your translations or manage them independently, we can help you build a tailor-made solution — from creating approved terminology glossaries to integrating them into your specialized multilingual translation workflow, all the way to designing a customized process with autonomous access to the DIY portal for a streamlined yet fully controlled experience.
